![]() While Nikon and Leica rangefinder systems were in serious competition, both companies made lenses in the M39 mount in various quantities through the 1950s. During the 1950s, several smaller companies (Cooke in the UK and Orion in Japan) fabricated separate adapters to Leica screw mount (M39) in small quantities. As a side note, Soviet Leica copies (Fed / Zorki) were designed to use M39 lenses with the Contax registration distance while its Contax copies (Kiev) used the lenses in the Contax standard. Although Nikon had adopted the Contax lens mount (external and internal) for the former’s 35mm interchangeable rangefinder cameras, Nikon’s choice of using Leica’s registration distance (51.6mm) and not Contax (52.4mm), all but the widest angle lenses were not quite compatible between the systems. ![]() ![]() ![]() From the 1950s, there has been a continuing interest in adapting Contax and Nikon rangefinder lenses to the Leica standard. ![]()
